Hello everyone!
Today was the last day of the summer session of the XX Coders camp. We had two speakers today to help us celebrate our code party! One speaker from Girls, Inc. came into walk us through a programming exercise. We also had another guest speaker come in to speak about her work as a female IT professional at the Wyandanch and Wheatley Heights Fire Department. Students also received awards and recognition for their hard work and dedication over the duration of the camp.
It has been a really rewarding past two weeks here. We had so much fun getting to know each other better while learning about computer science and writing code in programming languages like Scratch, JavaScript, Java and Python. We had guest speakers from Long Island Women in Tech and Girls, Inc. come to speak about the female experience in the tech industry. We also visited the Google headquarters in NYC to tour the work spaces and get our questions answered by Google employees. We hope that all of the experiences here empower the young women of XX Coders to continue to grow their love for computer science and become future innovators of technology.
I’m going to miss the girls so much! It was truly a pleasure getting to know each and every one of them and teaching them about coding. During the first few days, the girls were timid and shy, but by their second week, their confidence in coding grew. They became more comfortable and increased their participation in the classroom and during the guest talks.
I would love to continue teaching this program in the fall. Due to the success of the summer session, XX Coders will continue the camp program during the school year beginning October 2017. We will keep all parents informed of the dates once they are finalized. If you are interested in registering your child in the program during the school year, please stay tuned!
In addition, I have included some photos we have taken of the girls during the camp for the girls and their families to see!
Please keep in touch and happy coding!
