Today concluded our second annual, two week summer camp! It has been such an honor getting to know these girls and seeing them and their skills grow through this camp. Many of our students began this journey not having any experience what-so-ever with coding and found themselves today creating programs in advanced languages such as JavaScript and Python. We, here at XX coders have gotten to know the girls very well and felt that the girls deserved to have a bit of fun. So, we started off our day with a fun game of Jeopardy where the girls got to answer numerous questions with regards to women in tech, coding terms and fun facts! Afterwards, we let our STEMinists have a little free-range coding time where they developed small programs such as games and chat bots for presentation to the class and their parents who showed up towards the end to congratulate their girls and see how far they have come. In addition, XX coders also brought in Mr. Ming Fai Chan of Ming Photography who came over to shoot some video and photographs of the girls for our annual summer camp video. This video will be released through the XX coders YouTube, Facebook and Instagram pages as well as our website within the next few weeks. We were also grateful to have XX coder’s mentor, Stefana Muller, of Long Island Women in Tech visit us as she greeted the girls and spoke to them about her personal experience in the tech industry and about the importance of managing your social media profiles responsibly. And of course, she didn’t come empty handed as she showered the girls with some lovely swag to take home with them. It was also a great opportunity for Margarita and Sumaita, camp tutors and CS students from Queens College, to see the growth process of these lovely students.
Finally, after their final presentations we left the girls with a few small swag awards to commemorate their experiences here at our summer camp. As our girls left the camp, we all congratulated them on their completion of this material and encouraged them to continue to pursue STEM, both in and outside of school. We will also continue to offer our after school club starting in the fall so keep an eye out for an email with regards to that arriving your inboxes sometime in October. From all of us here at XX coders, we thank you for your time, dedication and trust and we hope to continue serving the local community by creating more STEM queens. For any questions regarding the camp or the after school clubs please reach out to Aditi at aditi@xxcoders.com.
