Today we had our lovely coders begin their two week coding journey! We are trying to increase student access and exposure to computer science education, specifically on the visual programming language, Scratch. The girls started off our camp with receiving swag bags from companies were nice enough to donate goodies to XXCoders! Then we started with two NCWIT surveys before the girls got to do anything coding related. Once the girls got done with lunch, we went around the room to introduce ourselves with our names, which school the girls attend, how old we are, what grade the girls are in, and one fun fact about ourselves. In order for the girls to engage with each other, we had the girls raise their hand towards the end of their introduction to see if they had anything in common. Our new teaching assistant Diana got the hang of working with the girls while also having other returning XXCoders help out the new students who were welcomed with open arms. The girls were able to kickoff our camp with a Scratch session to write out their names! Diana discussed what’s expected of the girls within the upcoming two weeks along with exciting information such as guest speakers! The girls did receive paperwork that must be signed and returned by tomorrow. We’ll see you tomorrow afternoon XXCoders!
